What is Dementia?
Dementia is not an illness/condition in itself, but an umbrella term used to cover a wide range of conditions that have similar symptoms.
These symptoms include problems with:
Memory – for example experiencing problems recalling recent events
Thinking and reasoning skills – for example finding it difficult to follow conversations or read information
Communication skills – for example experiencing difficulties processing information in verbal communication
These are referred to as ‘cognitive skills’.
These problems with cognitive skills are a result of damage to brain cells. There are a number of conditions that can cause this damage.
Dementia is not a natural part of ageing.
